Meet Eriza “EJ” Lee of EJLee Law Practice, LLC in Gwinnett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eriza “EJ” Lee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Eriza. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Detroit! My mom was born in Savannah so Georgia was always a place I visited as a kid. I graduated HS in 2001 and started college right away at Michigan State. However life happened, and I welcomed a son in 2003. Went back to school in 05 and graduated with a BS in Paralegal studies from Kaplan University. Soon after, I went to law school. While there, I knew I wanted a change of scenery. Having a strong family based was important, so I chose GA. Graduated in 2013 and took the February bar exam. I passed on the first try. I always knew I’d practice IP and entertainment and that’s exactly what I’m doing today. God has been good. I’ve experienced quite a bit of struggle in my life. From my son’s father passing away, suddenly at the age of 24 when my son was seven to losing my sister in law and her children to domestic violence six years prior. But God got me through it. I have represented some interesting people and continue to make strides in my practice. I started DIY legal courses (Copyright and Trademark) for those needing limited legal assistance.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road definitely has not been smooth. My son’s father passed away suddenly during my second year of law school. My son was only seven years old. I almost quit law school behind his death.

I moved to GA two weeks before the GA bar exam which was something one shouldn’t do before a major test.

While growing my practice, my beloved paternal grandmother passed. I felt guilty for leaving Michigan. I miss her dearly.

Growing my practice has not been easy. Often, clients question my fees or experience which I’m sure they do not do to men attorneys. But I have learned to be assertive and confident in what charge, the value and competent representation I give to my clients.

EJLee Law Practice, LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I initially started working solely with those in the music industry before expanding to businesses with IP issues. Every business will have to deal with IP at some point. So, over the years, I have become the go-to for Trademark and Copyright for businesses.

I had been discussing doing an IP DIY course for years and finally accomplished that goal this year. The course went really well and I want to roll out more courses for those needing limited legal assistance.

I am very hands-on with my clients. They can pretty much reach whenever they need to. I charge a flat rate so that clients can be assured that costs won’t get out of hand. I also ensure that my clients understand the difference between Copyright, Trademark, and Patent.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Booker T Washington said it best, success is not the position or money you’ve reached in life, but the obstacles you’ve overcome to get there.

So many things could’ve broken me, but my faith in God, my family, especially my son kept me going.

I have often thought people were not watching what I do, but have reached many messages from people I have inspired to go after their goals regardless of the obstacles. That’s a success to me.
