Marley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Jamaica, Queens, NY. While many are acquainted with the shining lights, local attractions and places to visit in New York – living in the “city the never sleeps” isn’t as easy as it seems.
In truth, while growing up in New York was a phenomenal experience, I quickly learned the true meaning of survival of the fittest. It was difficult to stay focused and out of trouble in my neighborhood; ask anybody that has ever ridden the E train. Luckily, for me, I had a great support system.
Both of my parents were born and raised in Jamaica and migrated to the United States when my brother was born. Naturally, I didn’t have the same opportunities as everyone else, but my parents went above and beyond the call of duty, giving my siblings and I every chance to succeed and make something of ourselves. Watching my older brother obtain a full scholarship to college made me realize that leaving home and going to college was an obtainable goal – that dreams really can come true. With that in mind, I decided to chase my very own dream and attend Delaware State University where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication with a concentration in convergence journalism. Post-graduation, I found myself in Atlanta, Georgia – a place I am now happy to call home.
After a few weeks in Atlanta, I fell in love with the city and the opportunities it provided, like meeting & eventually working with one the city’s preeminent moguls – Cam Kirk. Starting as Cam Kirk’s personal assistant, I gained valuable insight on the industry, working on projects with multiple artists and creatives, including Gunna, Meek Mill, Lil Yatchy, Hood Rich Pablo Juan, Lil Baby, and 21 Savage to name a few.
Today, I serve as Studio Manager for the prominent photography studio, Cam Kirk Studios, working with major companies like: FuseTV, Nike, and Uninterrupted. While our Studio has only been open for a little over a year, our goal is to continue to make a difference in our community for young creatives and entrepreneurs alike – rewriting history as we know it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been smooth so far. Although I moved to Atlanta a few months ago, I feel with help from the right support system somethings come a little easier for me. The people I consider family in Atlanta help me chase my dreams every day. My biggest challenge in New York was getting around the right circle of entrepreneurs to mentor me. With the move to Atlanta, I realized I shared the same dream as many people out here and they’re all willing to help. A big obstacle of mine was getting out of my comfort zone and making sure I stayed focused on my goals.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cam Kirk Studios – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a general manager at Cam Kirk Studios. The studio is a place for photographers and creatives to create projects, sharpen their creative skills, and conduct business with the professional tools needed to advance. As a manager, I analyze and improve organizational processes, and work to improve quality, productivity, and efficiency of the company, while also overseeing the day-to-day activities. I’m proud to see how much our company has grown in such a short amount of time since we first opened. The reaction we get from our clients also makes me happy to see that we are providing the proper customer service for creatives to create freely.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to continue to work on my personal brand and providing for my family. I want to become a tycoon of my generation. Coming from New York, I didn’t have many people to call mentors that had a hand in business. I plan to open a few businesses of my own soon. I have one about to launch by the end of the year, so that’s really exciting.
